THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COW LANE
Part Fifty-three
Aerial photo of complete Wilting site showing location of Cow Lane and main landing site
Cow Lane however has a far more significant use since it was undoubtedly the main access route for the Invasion force for provisions and support. The hedgerow leading to the marsh along Cow Lane can be established as very old, due to the large number of species(141) found there. The explanation that this roadway came into existence for the cows alone now appears unlikely. It runs directly to the centre of the main landing site, and from there to the upper fort. It’s age and location lead to the inevitable conclusion that it and the upper fort are directly linked.
